World War Animal Day — and the stories we mustn’t forget

Welcome to The Back Verandah.

Today, 24 February 2026, is World War Animal Day — a day to remember the millions of animals who have served alongside humans in times of war.

Horses, dogs, pigeons and camels carried messages, transported the wounded, detected danger and stood beside soldiers in unimaginable conditions. Their service reminds us that animals have always been part of our human story, not separate from it.

And it’s not only in war.

Animals play a major role in the lives of many people. The stock horses who knew every gate on the property. The sheep dogs who worked until dusk. The poddy calves hand-raised during a drought. The companion dog who joined you at work every day.

When we write memoirs, consider the animals who are woven into our memories, resilience, and identity.

As we pause today to honour animals in war, let’s also consider the important animals who have walked alongside you in your life. They may have shaped you more than you might realise.

With care,
